About our Hone Workshop
Harness Your Technique
A rare opportunity for potters to tell the teachers what they would like to learn.
Hone is a three day practice-based workshop aimed at proficient potters who are interested in improving their technique and want to work on a specific area of their practice. During the course you will receive one to one tuition in the area you’d like to work on alongside ongoing support and unlimited clay to practice with. The workshop will be held in the Kiln Shed, which is a large purpose-built studio within our grounds at Whichford Pottery. It allows you plenty of space to practice and develop your work, while also being inspired by the throwers in our large production pottery onsite.
The workshop includes demonstrations of techniques, plus one-to-one tuition from Joe, one of our Senior Throwers. Joe’s background in textile and design means he comes with a wealth of technical experience. Joe leads our Production Team and oversees all aspects of our workshop, including the making, glazing and firing of many of our most difficult commissions. Recent projects Joe has made include a 1.2 metre tall curved pipe for a Turner Prize Winning Artist and a set of ten 65cm tall mid-century style bespoke lampshades for a New York design firm.
Uniquely, the structure of this course is determined by the areas each participant wants to focus on.

Level: Proficient — to take part in this course you should be confident in achieving shapes with intention, detail and accuracy
What you take home: Up to three pieces that you throw throughout your workshop. We will fire these for collection four weeks later or can post them to you.
Price: £545 for three day course
Price includes clay, materials and firings as well as lunch & tea and cake on all three days.
Daily Timetable and Refreshments
Day 1: 11am – 4.30 pm
Day 2: 9am – 4.30pm
Day 3: 9am – 4pm
There will be an hour’s lunch break each day between 12.30 and 1.30. Lunch will be provided by our café, The Straw Kitchen.
On days 2 and 3 we will have a half an hour tea break at 10.30. Tea, coffee, biscuits/cake will be available throughout the day – self service. Individuals can take breaks as and when they feel necessary throughout the day.
Course Materials
Tools, equipment and aprons will be provided.
Please remember to wear comfortable clothing that
you do not mind getting dirty.
All clay and firing costs are included.
Please note that the clay you will be using throughout the course is earthenware and your pieces will not be glazed.
