Whichford Pottery: FAQ

Please click on a question to view the answer.

Are your pots frostproof?
We give a 10 year frostproof guarantee against lamination in the frost. We can give this guarantee because we prepare our own special frostproof clay using three different clays which we blend here at the Pottery. Our kilns are fired at a temperature which ensures that the pot is frostproof but still porous, ensuring a healthy growing environment for your plants.
Can you deliver?
We can deliver to your door in this country and overseas. Wherever possible we like to make the delivery ourselves, particularly if you are ordering large pots. Otherwise we use a reliable local carrier. We use straw and cardboard boxes for packing.
How much does delivery cost?
For flowerpots up to 81cm (32 inches) in diameter, our standard delivery charge to a mainland U.K. address is £29.50 irrespective of how many pots you order. We will give you a quotation for delivery of very large pots, special commissions, overseas, and express delivery.
Do your pots have drainage holes?
Every pot has a good-sized drainage hole much larger than you will find in a machine-made pot. This ensures good drainage for your plants and makes transplanting easier.
Do I need to stand my pot on feet or a saucer?
We do make pot feet but as a general rule our pots are designed to sit on the ground. However, you might wish to elevate the pot in which case you can use pot feet or bricks. If you are using pot feet do make sure they are frostproof. Saucers act as reservoirs in the summer months, or for use in a conservatory.
What size pot do I need?
Obviously it depends on the individual plant but as a general rule large pots are easier to plant and look after than smaller ones, and have much greater impact. We are always happy to advise you.
What compost is best?
Use a good quality well-drained multi-purpose compost. Keen gardeners might like to mix their own using peat, coir or bark compost mixed with loam-based compost and some gravel.
Can you make a pot especially for me?
Yes we can. Details of our special commission service can be found at www.whichfordbespoke.com
Can we visit?
You certainly can and there is lots to see. We are open Mondays to Fridays 9am - 5pm, Saturdays 10am to 4pm, and Sundays from Easter to Christmas from 11am to 4pm. Please see Visting Us page for Christmas Opening hours.
Can I place my order over the telephone?
You most certainly can order over the telephone - we like speaking to our customers. Office opening hours are 8.30am to 5pm from Monday to Friday. You can also order on Saturday from 10am to 4pm and on Sundays (April to Christmas) from 11am to 4pm. There is an answerphone if the office is closed, so please leave a message and we will return your call as soon as we can.
Can we see the flowerpots being made at Whichford?
If you would like to see how are pots are made and chat to the potters as they work, we recommend you visit Monday to Thursdays when the Pottery is in full swing.
Will they develop a patina?
Our flowerpots are fired to a high enough temperature to ensure they are frostproof, but not so high that they won't gradually develop a patina over time.
Do you deliver abroad?
We do deliver all over the world and have stockists in several countries. We are always happy to quote. Please contact us for more details.
Is there wheelchair access?
There is wheelchair access from the car park and in the stockyard and gallery. Access inside the pottery is limited. We are sorry but our toilet facilities have limited access but they are on the ground floor.
Do you have a tea room?
Although we don't have a tea room, we are always happy to make you a cup of tea or coffee which you can sit and enjoy in our Octagon Gallery, or in our courtyard garden. The village pub, The Norman Knight, has delicious food and its own micro-brewery.
Are your pots available anywhere else?
We do have some stockists in the U.K. including The Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley, Great Dixter and other outlets. We also have stockists in other countries, including Japan. If you would like details of your nearest stockist please contact us on 01608 684416 or email sales@whichfordpottery.com
